ChallengingPhysical Estimation
Estimate the number of EV charging stations India will need by 2030
Scope it first — questions to ask
- · Charging stations (locations) or charging points (guns)? — Chosen: estimate public charging points first, then convert (~3 points per station).
- · Public infrastructure only, or home chargers too? — Chosen: public only; home charging enters as a deduction, not a count.
- · All vehicle segments? — Chosen: yes — 2W, 3W, 4W, buses/trucks; battery-swap slots counted as equivalent points.
Assumptions on the table
- · 2030 EV parc ≈ 40M: 30M two-wheelers, 5M three-wheelers, 4.5M cars, 0.5M buses/trucks — built from ~20M annual 2W sales at ~35–40% EV share and ~5M car sales at ~15–20% EV share, accumulated over the decade.
- · ~80% of e-2Ws charge at home on a regular 15A socket — small batteries, overnight charging; only 20% depend on public points/swaps.
- · 3Ws are commercial and run all day — ~60% depend on public charging/swapping, and need dense coverage (1 point per 10 vehicles).
- · Cars need ~1 public point per 15 vehicles — global benchmark of 1:15–20 where home charging exists, tightened for India's parking-scarce cities.
- · Buses/trucks charge at depots at high intensity — ~1 point per 5 vehicles.
